Workbench Usage for Optimal Performance

Issue/Symptom/Question

How can I improve workbench performance?

How many workbench panels can I add on a tab?

How many tabs can I have on my PENTA Workbench

Should I limit the data each panel queries?

Applies To

PENTA Workbench

Resolution/Fix/Answer

Workbench Configuration Best Practices:

  • Recommended no more than 6 panels per tab.
    • Pro tip: Add more tabs, less panels per tab.
  • Each panel should be filtered to pull back small data sets.
  • There will be times one needs to query additional data, but that should be exception only.
  • Each time one refreshes Workbench, all panels on the current tab refresh and if the panels have open date ranges or are selected for all legal entities, one will see performance delays, potential time outs, and even CPU spikes on the server
    • Examples:
      • One business unit for a one week time period.
      • Open AP/AR aging for one company, not all companies.
      • Job Cost/Revenue for one business unit and active jobs only.
    • Pro tip: For larger queries, try to break them up into multiple smaller queries. Instead of running a report for all companies for the last 5 years, break it down by business unit and by year and consolidate later if possible. If large queries are needed, try running them after hours, if possible.
