Where and how do I set up new pay rates?

Issue/Symptom/Question

Please direct us to where new rate #'s (payroll pay rate #'s) take place in Penta.

Applies To

Payroll > Set up > Pay Groups, Payroll Classes, and Workers Compensation > Payroll Classes

Resolution/Fix/Answer

New pay rates are set up in the Payroll Classes screen, in the Standard Charge tab, are defined by you, and are unique within payroll class.

Pay rates can be set up for each union pay grade level applicable to the Payroll Class you are updating, or they can be general groupings to identify types of work, or Salary vs Hourly setup, all depending on the way you assign rates to your employees.

To set up a new rate,

  • Navigate to a new record on the Standard Charging tab of the Payroll Class
  • Enter a number that has not yet been used for this class
  • Enter the Description that should apply to this rate
  • If Standard Charges are to be entered along with the rate, enter the Contra Account number
  • If there are default codes to be associated with the rate, enter them in the appropriate fields.
  • Determine if the rate is Hourly or Salary (it cannot be both, and cannot be changed by employee)
  • If Salaried, and overtime hours are recognized, determine the rate multiplier for P1 and P2 hours (if they are paid at straight time rates, enter 1 in these fields)
  • If subject to banking overtime, enter Y in this field (usually the default of N is correct)
  • Review whether this rate should calculate retroactive pay for any period of time.
  • In the Hourly Rates block:
    • Enter the effective date that should be applied to the rate (keep in mind the beginning date of the payroll period it is first used)
    • Enter the Regular, P1 and P2 rates that apply for this rate
    • If applicable, enter the standard charge rate to be posted to jobs if needed
