Inventory transfers at zero ($0.00) cost per unit when an inventory balance exists

Inventory transfers at zero ($0.00) cost per unit when an inventory balance exists

Issue/Symptom/Question

A transfer of inventory units from a warehouse to a work order was recorded at zero ($0.00) cost per unit even though the warehouse / warehouse location had a positive inventory balance for the product being transferred.

Environment

PENTA for Windows

Work Order Transaction Entry window

  • Inventory block

Resolution/Fix/Answer

This issue was the result of an update of the organization unit Id assigned to a warehouse. In this scenario a "warehouse" is actually a service van / truck. Because this vehicle was reassigned to a new location, a different organization unit in PENTA, a request was made to update the warehouse OU Id. Because there is no standard function/process in PENTA to update a warehouse OU Id Penta development resources are required to perform this change. When the update is performed it is important for the organization unit Id to be updated on inventory transfer records in addition to the warehouse Id itself.

For inventory transfers into a warehouse:

  • Update the "To" OU Id

For inventory transfer from a warehouse to a Job / Work Order / Account / Fixed Asset:

  • Update the "From" OU Id

Cause

This scenario occurs when the following are true:

  • An inventory transfer occurs that takes the warehouse / warehouse location for a product to a zero units
  • PENTA Option 294 is set = 1 (when inventory units are reduced to zero the transfer unit price will result in a zero balance for that product even when a standard cost rate exists for the product)

When these are true PENTA uses the current organization unit assigned to the warehouse to analyze the historical transactions to determine the current dollar balance for the warehouse / location / product Id. This problem arises when the OU Id is modified on the warehouse but is NOT modified on the warehouse transfer history records.
